Hamas (Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamiyya, meaning "Islamic Resistance Movement") is a Palestinian Sunni Islamist political and militant organization. Founded in 1987, Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since 2007. Designated as a terrorist organization by several countries and international bodies, Hamas launched the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, which precipitated the ongoing war in Gaza.
