UNIFIL is a United Nations peacekeeping mission established in 1978 in southern Lebanon. UNIFIL monitors the cessation of hostilities along the Blue Line (the border demarcation between Lebanon and Israel), assists the Lebanese government in restoring authority in the south, and ensures humanitarian access. UNIFIL forces have come under fire during recent escalations.
