The Janjaweed were armed militias operating in western Sudan's Darfur region, primarily composed of Arab nomadic groups. Notorious for atrocities committed during the Darfur conflict starting in 2003, many Janjaweed fighters were later incorporated into the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The term remains associated with mass violence against civilian populations in Darfur.
