Sudan's healthcare system on brink of collapse after cuts, medical charity warns

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reported that Sudan's healthcare system is nearing collapse due to a combination of global funding cuts and ongoing conflict. Following the closure of USAID funding streams, 45 healthcare centers in central Darfur ceased operations in May 2026, forcing patients to travel longer distances for care. MSF noted that admissions in its supported central Darfur facilities increased by 22.5% between January and April 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Additionally, MSF reported 1,620 deaths resulting from attacks on medical facilities in Sudan during 2025, representing 82% of global fatalities from such attacks. Separately, medical sources reported that a drone strike in the army-controlled town of Umm Ruwaba, North Kordofan, killed at least 11 people on Tuesday.
