UN slams Israel’s expansion of illegal settlements in occupied West Bank

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Israel's acceleration of settlement development in the occupied West Bank on Monday, calling settlements a 'flagrant violation' of international law and a major obstacle to a two-state solution. His statement followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Friday announcement that his government would 'accelerate the legalisation of farm outposts and establishment of new ones'. Since Thursday, violence has escalated: at least eight Palestinians, including a child, and two Israelis were killed. Israeli settlers, often under the protection of Israeli forces, burned or vandalized Palestinian civilian infrastructure and agricultural structures, displacing at least 10 families. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that Israeli forces or settlers have killed 77 Palestinians this year, including 18 children, while Palestinians killed three Israelis; over 1,330 settler-related incidents involving casualties or property damage have been documented since January. Israeli forces also tightened movement restrictions across the territory, cutting off thousands from emergency medical care and livelihoods.
