‘This is where democracy beats totalitarianism’: Ukraine’s drone strike force takes the fight to Russia

What Happened

On 21 July, the Kairos battalion of Ukraine's 414th aviation brigade, part of the 'Magyar's Birds' unmanned systems brigade, launched a coordinated long-range drone strike against 13 electricity substations in Russian-occupied Crimea and parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson provinces. The operation, dubbed the Crimean 'switch off', aims to disconnect the region from its power and logistics networks. The drones, built by a Kyiv-based defence startup, each carried 50–100kg of explosives and flew to a target in Alushta, Crimea, where one hit a 110kV substation and caused fires. Lt Col Ray, the battalion commander, stated that such strikes are acts of 'revenge and justice' for Russia's ongoing invasion and nightly attacks on Ukrainian cities. Separately, Robert Brovdi, head of Ukraine's unmanned systems forces, reported that since July his brigade has damaged over 200 vessels in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea and recently set fire to nine Wildberries warehouses in Russia, claiming the company sells military products.
