Russia threatens to further intensify attacks on Kyiv following hits in Moscow

What Happened

The Russian Ministry of Defence threatened to intensify attacks on Kyiv, specifically 'military targets' there, in response to what it called Ukrainian attacks on civilian infrastructure, according to TASS. The Russian MoD claimed the attempted Ukrainian attack on Moscow failed and said 1,951 Ukrainian UAVs and 8 cruise missiles were shot down over the course of the day; these figures are Russian MoD claims and not independently verified. The threat follows Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow and Moscow Oblast on the night of 19-20 September. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the capital had come under its largest drone attack to date. Fires were reported at the Sofyino logistics technopark and the Kapotnya oil refinery, including the Moscow oil refinery. Ukraine's General Staff reported three units at the Moscow oil refinery were damaged, and that Ukrainian defence forces hit a Russian Buk-M3 air defence system, a Nebo-U radar station and a drone production site on occupied territories.
