What Happened

Three separate Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday killed at least 12 Palestinians, according to local medics and Palestinian media. In the western al-Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, an overnight airstrike struck an apartment building, killing Firas al-Masri, his wife Salsabeel, and their three daughters and son (Faryal, Salma, Amira, and Naim). Video footage showed the apartment on fire. The Israeli military stated it had targeted a Hamas operative in the strike and was investigating the outcome. Later that afternoon, a strike on a home in the al-Samar area of central Gaza City killed four people, and a drone strike on a vehicle in al-Zahra south of Gaza City killed two more, medics said. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on those two strikes. The UN Human Rights Office condemned the intensification of Israeli attacks, noting that between 13 and 20 July, at least 57 Palestinians were killed, 34 of them ‘killed far away’ from the Israeli-controlled Yellow Line. Since a ceasefire took effect last October, Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reports 1,168 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks, while four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks.
