What Happened

On 3 September, before dawn, Lebanese farmer Saleh saw lights outside his neighbours' abandoned house in the southern Lebanese border village of Halta and told Middle East Eye that an Israeli army unit was searching houses in the village. According to Saleh, Israeli soldiers called three residents on their mobile phones and instructed them to come outside; after several hours of interrogations, the soldiers took the three men away, including Hatem Abdel-Aal, a member of Halta's municipal council. Saleh said the Israeli army returned Abdel-Aal at around midnight, after telling him to come to them by foot, without a car: 'The man followed their instructions and headed their way. He couldn't refuse.'
