A senior Somali government official told Middle East Eye that Israel deployed a contingent of 50 soldiers to Somaliland earlier this year. The soldiers, described as being of African heritage—specifically Ethiopian—were selected to blend in locally, according to the official. The deployment allegedly took place soon after Israel recognized Somaliland's independence in December 2023 and after what the official termed 'the resumption of the war with Iran in late February.' The Israeli military declined to comment on the deployment, while Somaliland's government did not respond to MEE's requests for comment. Separately, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated on Wednesday that Israel and Somaliland had been cooperating secretly for years and that they are now 'determined to bring our security cooperation to new heights.' Katz made the remarks during a meeting with Somaliland's visiting President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi. Somaliland's Defence Minister Mohamed Yusuf Ali denied that Israel has a base in the territory but acknowledged that Israel is providing training to Somaliland police and military forces. CNN previously reported, citing unnamed sources, that Somaliland had provided Israel with an additional military site, potentially for use as a stopover during long-range flights to Iran.
