Israel charges settler over killing of Palestinian involved in Oscar-winning West Bank film

What Happened

Israeli prosecutors charged settler Yinon Levy with reckless manslaughter, armed trespassing and malicious property damage over the July 2025 killing of Palestinian activist Odeh Hathaleen in the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair. According to the indictment, settlers operated an excavator in the village, leading to a confrontation during which Levy cocked his gun and fired toward residents, fatally striking Hathaleen, before firing another shot into the air. Levy, who has denied firing the fatal shot, stated through his lawyer that the prosecution made a ‘mistaken decision’ and that he acted in self-defence.
