The Israeli military is constructing a massive earthen barrier across Gaza, extending well beyond the ceasefire agreement's 'yellow line' that was meant to demarcate temporary Israeli-controlled territory. Satellite images and reporting from Haaretz and AP show the barrier, consisting of an earth berm and trench, already spans more than 23 km of the roughly 40 km length of the Gaza Strip. In Khan Younis, the barrier sits approximately 400 metres beyond the yellow line, and near Rafah it reaches about 1,300 metres past it. The construction cuts through destroyed Palestinian communities and has been accompanied by new Israeli roads and military bases on razed areas. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated on Channel 14 last week his intention to establish three Nahal outposts in northern Gaza. On Sunday, thousands of Israelis, including settlers and right-wing activists, marched to the Gaza border calling for the re-establishment of Israeli settlements. Palestinians remain confined to coastal tent camps west of the yellow line, where they continue to face airstrikes and shortages.
