Israel building earthen barrier in Gaza to entrench division of the enclave

What Happened

The Israeli military is constructing a large earthen barrier—an earth berm and trench—that extends well beyond the ‘yellow line’ designated by the October 2025 US-backed ceasefire agreement. Satellite images and reporting by Haaretz show the barrier is already over 23 km long, cutting through destroyed Palestinian communities. In Khan Younis it lies roughly 400 metres past the yellow line, and in the Rafah area it reaches approximately 1,300 metres beyond it. The Israeli military confirmed it is building a physical barrier in the area, while Defence Minister Israel Katz told Channel 14 he intends to establish three ‘Nahal outposts’—military–settlement entities—in northern Gaza. On Sunday, thousands of Israelis, including settlers and right-wing activists, marched to the Gaza border calling for the re-establishment of settlements. Palestinians, now confined to crowded tent camps west of the yellow line, face ongoing airstrikes and aid shortages. Israeli forces have killed Palestinians, including civilians, who approached or crossed the line, with some soldiers saying they have orders to fire on anyone crossing.
