Hamas named Khalil al-Hayya as its new leader, the group announced on Monday. Hayya, a veteran figure who has been among the group's top leaders living abroad, replaces Yahya Sinwar, who was killed in direct combat with the Israeli army in Rafah, southern Gaza, on 17 October 2024. Sinwar's death followed Israel's assassination of previous leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July 2024. After Sinwar's death, Hamas had formed a five-member cabinet led by Muhammad Ismail Darwish, head of the Shura Council.
