Hamas in Gaza completes voting for general political bureau head

EVENT SUMMARY

Hamas in Gaza completed internal voting on 7 October 2023 to select a new head of its general political bureau, with results pending announcement next week after West Bank and diaspora branches vote; candidates Khalil al-Hayya and Khaled Mashaal represent competing regional alignments with Iran and Turkey respectively. The election follows Yahya Sinwar's death in October 2024 and reflects Hamas's deepening organizational crisis, amid declining Gaza support (31% in April 2024 polling versus 70% in December 2023) and competition from technocratic governance alternatives.
