Gaza families bury 112 people recovered nearly three years after Israeli strikes

What Happened

On Tuesday, families in Gaza City buried 112 members of the Abu Shari'a and al-Hasayna clan killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Sabra neighbourhood in November 2023. The remains were recovered between 14 July and 1 August, nearly three years after the strikes, by Palestinian Civil Defence crews working with limited equipment. The strikes had flattened a residential block, killing over 300 people, including 44 children and 37 women, according to the Civil Defence. Spokesperson Mahmoud Basal said recovery took 17 days under extreme conditions, with thousands more still buried under rubble across Gaza. Survivor Mahmoud al-Hasayneh said around 200 family members had sheltered in the home of former PA minister Mofeed al-Hasayneh, who held US citizenship and was killed. Gaza’s missing persons committee head Omar Nofal estimated 6,000 officially registered missing, with the true figure closer to 15,000.
